Cloth Diapers, Really?

It's true, my interest has been peaked and I'm seriously contemplating the cost benefits of cloth diapers (thanks Jodi!). I must admit, at first thought you are brought back to the yellow stained (unless thoroughly bleached) white bulky, no elastic, held together by a metal baby pins...diapers. It's not a very appealing thought or visual if you're thinking of the messes these diapers once left behind. My mother used cloth diapers and she has told me ageless stories of exploding poop up the back, down the legs and who knows what other hidden places it ended up. Thick cotton cloth diapers held together with a sharp object and often covered with an unbreathable plastic 'panty'.

No thanks.

It has been brought to my attention that cloth diapers have made quite the journey over the years in terms of functionality, appearance and ease. They have snaps and elastic for pete's sake!

Behold!

With two babies on the way, I'm basically looking at 4+ years worth of diapers consolidated in to 2+ years. Two butts equals double the cost, so if the kids take two years to be potty trained (is that the norm?) that's basically 4 years worth crammed into those two years. Do the math...that's thousands of dollars people. At $30 a box of diapers...roughly a box of diapers a week...think of the savings!

I was even directed to a nifty high pressure spray hose that attaches directly to the back of the toilet water supply.

Now, everyone has to be on board and that includes Jason. We all have to be ready to spray poop into a toilet. It's an investment though; they aren't cheap so you can't buy these things and then decide not to use them. It takes full commitment people.

I'll keep you posted...

After our stash of disposables runs out (thanks to everyone at my shower), we are making the switch to CD! One of my friends has an online store if you are interested in seeing it (let me know). We figured out the savings, and it will likely be around $2-3K (between wipes and dipes), which is HUGE. It does suck that the upfront cost is so large, but I think it will be worth it!
